They are loved because they transparently bring all sorts of nifty enhancements to our Macs. They are hated because all the conflicts and system bombs that they can cause. For example, here is a conversation that I overheard at the last MacWorld Expo: User Frank: Ever since I put your Longcut INIT software on my hard disk, I get constant bombs. Techie Mike: Hmm ... well what other INITs are you running? User Frank: Ooh ... gads of them, but everythingvas working OK together for a while there.
